Why's everyone suddenly doing tech?
Hustle culture: Post TapSwap style
I rejected this boy’s advances and he told me i was missing out/sleeping on potential. what potential exactly? Oh he’s an ‘upcoming tech bro who is going to make it big soon’, i should ‘just watch’.
Me: Errr… okay. Because honestly, i don’t blame him.
What’s up guy?
I don’t know if you’ve noticed but everyone, your CL, neighbors, cousins and that “tech bro” and “UI/UX Queen” in your group chat are all diving headfirst into tech. What’s the hype about? Should you care?
I asked this question openly, let’s breakdown the responses:
Big Money!!!
Let’s not sugarcoat it, tech pays! Whether it’s coding apps or designing websites, you’re looking at salaries that can make your landlord respect you. Imagine living in Nigeria and spending like you’re abroad, with all the remote work gigs available and with the economy being as it is? who wouldn’t want that?
Ease of Access?
From platforms like Coursera, YouTube, various bootcamps, online tutorials and even mentors on social media, you can go from a ‘tech newbie’ to ‘tech bro pro’ without leaving your room. Skills are on par with degrees these days.
The FOMO is real!
If your WhatsApp stories are anything like mine, you’d see sprinkles of “my first tech gig” or just some tech talk almost every other week. Everybody’s hopping on the tech train because they’ve seen their friends flexing “Got my first job in tech” posts on LinkedIn (people like Bala Abdulfattah 😒).
I opened a LinkedIn account recently and ha!
It just felt very formal and professional like “add some respect there please” 😭
That’s not the point… but combine that with influencers hyping tech as the holy grail of financial freedom and you’d have people learning Python faster than they’ve learned to spell names and not depend on autocorrect 💀.
Who would want to miss out?
Tech really is more than just coding
If you’re like former me and at the first mention of tech, your mind goes to ‘coding’ ‘java’ ‘python’ ‘programming’. I’m here to tell you that not everyone has to be a programmer o! I attended The Sauced Expo 2024, lifechanging event fr. Figured the tech world has space for creatives and organizers too! From product management and digital marketing to UI/UX design, data analysis and even content creation. There’s a role for every personality type, you just have to find your niche.
Securing the future(Post TapSwap era?)
Traditional jobs are getting shakier and tech and many more unconventional job roles are looking like the safest bet. The demand for skills are skyrocketing and people are trying to secure the bag before the ship sails.
All this for what?
Let’s be real. It’s not all LinkedIn post or tech success posts or dollar salaries. You have to sit to grind, learn and grow, constantly evolve to stay relevant. So if you’re jumping into tech, do it for the passion or the long-term benefits, or both- not just for the hype.
So what’s next? is tech calling your name? or are you building your empire in another lane? Hit reply let’s gist 😌
