Who go blink first?
ASUU and FG playing “who go blink first,” Post-FUTCH, rumoured school fees wahala, and OpenAI pulling up to UNILAG like “make way for the future"
What’s up guyyyyyyy!
I know 😞 I’m sorry. I’m learning to be accountable, like Bala Abdulfattah finally giving a date for the release of The Afrocentric edition of our magazine. Does that make you happy? I didn’t really think of ideas to make you take me back. But…
Anywayyy, let’s get into the gist
ASUU vs FG: The Battle of Nonchalance
At this point, the ASUU strike feels like a silent breakup, after all the high hopes that there wouldn’t be strike for a very long time, it’s looking like our sign-out captions would be “after 6 years, after 7 years, God did” Unless you just completed final year of course. If you have, i’m happy for you, Congratulations. I hope you get to have a convocation ceremony 🙂
FG is acting like students don’t exist. ASUU is acting like they don’t care if the semester ends in 2027. And we? We’re stuck here, waiting for headlines like it’s Livescores.
One side wants funding, the other wants peace, neither wants to be the first to text “let’s talk.”
Academic calendar? Buried alive.
Final year students?? no words.
Let’s just say, if “nonchalance” was a sport, both ASUU and FG would be in the Olympics. Unless you want to include NANS president who after pointing out all of the beautiful things the Tinubu-led administration has done for students and how ASUU are being party poopers, still pleaded with both parties to resolve their issues in 7 days.
They said it’s a two week strike, we’re almost one week in and no party has said anything. It is well.
SCHOOL FEES
Even if ASUU calls off the strike tomorrow, don’t get too excited yet. Word on campus streets is: school fees might be going up.
Because apparently, “catching up” after small strike now comes with a “financial adjustment.”
Translation: you’ll pay for your missed lectures, literally.
So yes, school might resume, but your parents’ and your account balance might drop faster than your CGPA after strike break.
FUTCH: We Showed Out, You Missed Out
If you were at FUTCH, you’d know that it was pure madness!!! in the best way. Everything slapped, the people, their outfits, the games and networking sessions? We left with big smilessss on our faces.
If you weren’t there, your feed would soon be torturing you. From convos on creativity to the “who’s that in the background?” moments, FUTCH gave what needed to be given. And yes!!!!!!! we’re already plotting the next one.
OpenAI Touches Down in UNILAG
In what might be the most futuristic news of the month, OpenAI, one of the world’s largest AI company, just opened its first African AI Academy and UNILAG said ‘bring the keyssss’.
Finally, something in Nigeria is starting on time.
Students are about to get hands-on with AI tools, mentorship, and global exposure.
Still, we’ll give props. Nigeria might just be cooking something in the tech kitchen for real this time.
Meanwhile, Elsewhere in the World…
Elon Musk is still tweeting like he owns the planet (which, to be fair, he kinda does).
Inflation’s doing backflips, fuel is auditioning for “most expensive perfume,” and yet we still dey outside.
TikTok might be banned (again). But if they ban it, where will people get their breaking news?
Let’s recap,
ASUU’s chilling. FG’s pretending not to care. FUTCH gave us hope. OpenAI’s teaching bots in Lagos.
Moral of the story? Everyone’s doing something, except the people meant to fix education.
Stay unserious, stay informed, and pleaseeeeee save money, because school might soon bill in USD.
Till next gist,
Gbemi from 10.8.8 Africa
