My brain wan blow!
Managing burnout when everything else is burning
What's up guyyyy?
If you’re exhausted, unmotivated, and lowkey overwhelmed, you’re not alone.
You’re not failing.
You’re burnt out.
(*activates therapist mode… this is a safe space my love 😗)
I'm committed to giving you campus survival guides sooooo…
Here’s a realistic guide for students managing burnout when life refuses to calm down.
1. First, let’s redefine burnout
Burnout is not just “I’m tired.”
It can look like:
Constant procrastination
Feeling numb instead of stressed
Losing interest in school, hobbies, or people
Being tired no matter how much you sleep
If this sounds familiar, you’re not lazy. You’re overwhelmed. And you're first course of action is to identify and accept the fact that you're burnt out, before you start “pushing through it” or “thugging it”
2. Accept that “rest” doesn’t have to be dramatic
You don’t need a whole weekend getaway to rest.
You'd say you're tired and the next thing anybody says is “sorry, try to rest”
How do I even rest when I have lectures all through the week, deadlines banging at my door, and many other things to catch up with? Instead of actively finding time to ‘rest’ , you can start small.
Try:
20 minutes of doing absolutely nothing without guilt (this one go hard sha, unless you have nothing to do with your life 💀)
Sleeping without setting alarms on free days
Making conscious efforts to eat well throughout the day.
Closing your laptop and deciding, “I’ll continue tomorrow”
Rest that fits into your reality is still rest.
3. Stop romanticizing struggle
Suffering is not a requirement for success.
Being constantly exhausted doesn’t make you hardworking.
It just makes you exhausted.
You don’t need to suffer extra to deserve progress.
4. Lower the bar on bad days
Some days, “doing your best” means:
attending the class
submitting something, even if it’s not perfect
surviving the day without crying in public
And that’s okay.
5. Protect your energy like it’s a resource
Not every conversation needs your emotional input.
Not every issue needs your reaction.
It’s okay to log out mentally from things that drain you.
Peace is productive too.
6. Check in with yourself, not just your grades
Ask:
Am I tired or just overwhelmed?
What do I actually need right now?
What can wait till later?
Sometimes clarity reduces stress more than motivation does.
Rememberrr,
You are doing school in a very intense world.
Feeling tired does not mean you’re weak.
It means you’re human.
Burnout doesn’t mean stop trying.
It means slow down where you can and be kind to yourself while you keep going. 🫶🏾
