Gist don land!
A week of surprises, tragedies, and activism across universities in one glance.
What's up guyyy?
I hear Detty December is already stretching its legs like it wants to scatter the whole country. Me I'm not prepared o 😔
Anyway, Nigeria still found a way to drop serious campus gist this week. While everyone is either juggling last-minute classes, exams, resumptions, vacations or small-small holiday planning, the student space has been buzzing with news that actually matters. Here is everything you missed while calculating money for December outings.
1. Papiri Schoolchildren Rescue Update (Niger State)
There was a bit of relief this week from the St. Mary's Catholic school, Papiri abduction case. Authorities confirmed that about one hundred of the kidnapped schoolchildren have been rescued and reunited with their families. Parents were seen crying and hugging their kids after weeks of uncertainty.
It is still not a complete victory because some pupils remain missing, but this week brought real progress and renewed hope for the community.
2. UNIJOS Accident Tragedy
The University of Jos had a very painful week. Eight students lost their lives in a vehicle crash along Jos–Bauchi Road, with several others sustaining injuries. The news hit the campus hard.
Departments postponed activities, students held prayer circles, and social media was filled with tributes and photos of the victims.
It has been one of the saddest moments for the school this year, and support has been pouring in for the affected families.
3. Suicide Incident at Law School Yola
A heartbreaking incident occurred at the Nigeria Law School, Yola campus. A male student reportedly took his own life after being barred from writing the Bar Finals due to exam issues.
The story spread quickly across all Law School campuses, with many students pointing out how intense the pressure can be.
Authorities are still investigating the full circumstances, but the incident has started a larger conversation about mental health, academic struggles, and the need for proper support systems.
4. LASU Five Protest Re-Ignites
The long-running LASU Five matter made its way back into the news. Activists, students, and staff supporters gathered at the Lagos State House of Assembly demanding reinstatement of the five lecturers dismissed in 2019.
The protest was peaceful, but loud enough to draw attention again to the case, which many believe has dragged for too long.
For students, it’s a reminder of how complicated campus politics and administrative issues can get and how long justice sometimes takes.
Let's recap
Niger State rescue brings back about one hundred abducted schoolchildren, UNIJOS mourns eight students lost in a major road accident, Law school Yola shaken after a student reportedly takes his life following exam suspension, protests return for the reinstatement of the LASU Five dismissed lecturers.
It has been a heavy but important week for students across Nigeria. As Detty December continues warming up, stay safe, stay sharp, and catch your breath when you can.
Until next gist,
Gbemi from 10.8.8 Africa ✨
